Plaza House is located in the beautiful lower Piedmont area of Oakland, California. We are above and within easy walking distance to scenic Lake Merrit as well as the world famous Piedmont Avenue, and the Lakeshore/Grand Avenue dining district. Our little street, Chetwood, dead ends in the beautifully historic Oakland Rose Gardens. We enjoy an amazing and eclectic organic farmers market every Saturday down the street between the lake and the wonderfully restored Grand Lake Theater, which still has a huge working pipe organ.

The San Francisco Bay Area is well known for it's progressive ideas, with great recreational and educational opportunities. This extends to entertainment and the arts as well as it's superior public transportation. We are no exception with a bus line around the corner going to The BART Station (Bay Area Rapid Transit), every 20 minutes. We are also lucky to be surrounded by an active and flourishing recovery community with 12 step meetings of every type within walking distance. At Plaza House, only 2 men share a room with cable access in all rooms and high speed wireless Internet access anywhere in the house.

Plaza House was started by Dr. David Smith, Richard Frank, and Dr. Donald Wesson. Dr. Smith founded The Haight Ashbury Free Clinic in 1967 and Richard Frank was their first CEO. Both have worked in the field for over forty years and are directly associated with the house. Steven Levine is the manager and responsible for all aspects of running a twelve bed recovery facility. The three work closely together on all issues clinical and administrative. A strong foundation in early sobriety is the key.
